Goals

-------

The main goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers from different disciplines to discuss the creation of what we call "empathic agents". Empathy has been associated with the processes that make a person to have "feelings that are more congruent with another's situation than with his own situation". Humans, when interacting with virtual agents or robots can be led to feel empathy, and experience a diverse set of emotional reactions. On the other hand, agents and robots can in a certain, perhaps limited way, also show certain emotions in reaction to human emotions, thus seemingly expressing empathy towards other agents and towards humans.  Further, agents interacting in social simulation scenarios may react to the other agents in a way that is more congruent with the other's. Thus, by seeking inspiration in empathic relations established between humans and between humans and animals, in this workshop we expect to explore these dimensions of empathic agents.



This workshop is multidisciplinary in nature. We expect to involve researchers who are not only interesting in studying intelligent virtual agents, social simulation and social robotics, but also those interested in empathy, cognition, ethology, emotions, human interactions, computer graphics, human-robots interaction and human/computer interaction.

Researchers are invited to submit papers for the workshop focusing the topics of interest of the workshop stating clearly how they can contribute to the themes proposed. Papers should be no longer than 8 pages and must use the AAMAS format (http://aamas2012.webs.upv.es/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=19&Itemid=19). All papers will be reviewed by at least two members of the program committee in a single-blind review process. At least one author of each accepted paper is required to register for the workshop.

The workshop on Affective Computing (AC) will focus on the role of affect, social behaviour, and related issues in the development of computer systems. Relevant topics include the consideration of factors like emotions, mood, personality traits, and attitudes in human-computer, human-robot, and human-environment interaction, especially insofar as they provide better or more "natural" support for humans. Also relevant is the role of such factors in facilitating access to the knowledge essential for making better decisions in response to interactions between individuals and the environments (e.g. facilitating social interaction among humans or among humans and artificial characters).

Affective Computing is a multidisciplinary field that draws upon such areas as sociology, psychology, human-machine interaction, virtual environments, and, obviously, Artificial Intelligence. It is also a field with a wide range of applications, including virtual reality, decision support, computer games, and ambient intelligence, social robotics, and ECAs (Embodied Conversational Agents).

The purpose of this workshop on Affective Computing is to bring together researchers to discuss theories, architectures and applications which are based on a combination of cognitive and affective considerations and that can be applied to groups of individually different persons and their interactions.

Papers should not exceed fifteen (15) pages in length and must be formatted according to the information for LNCS authors. Papers must be submitted in PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format) format and will not be accepted in any other format.

Papers that exceed 15 pages or do not follow the LNCS guidelines risk being rejected automatically without a review. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the conference. AIMS AND SCOPE:

Negotiation is a complex and sometimes emotional decision-making process aiming to reach an agreement to exchange goods or services. Although a daily activity, extensive research has shown that few people are effective negotiators. Current state of the art negotiation support systems can help make a significant improvement in negotiation performance. In particular, when the negotiation space is well-understood such systems can make a difference, partly because machines can much better deal with the computational complexity involved. However, the negotiation space can only be properly developed if the human parties jointly explore their interests.

The inherent semantic problem and the emotional issues involved make that negotiation cannot be handled by artificial intelligence alone, and a human-machine collaborative system is required. Such systems are not only to support humans in providing strategic advice but also in coping with emotions and moods in human-human interactions.

In order to develop human-machine collaborative negotiation support systems there is a need for the development of computational models, frameworks, and experimental, user-centred and ergonomic methods that enable the engineering of negotiation support systems. It is important for this purpose to study the role of human factors in negotiation as well as computational models to enable intelligent support for negotiation. To develop the next generation of negotiation support systems there are still many, diverse challenges:

models of (qualitative, incomplete) preferences, preference change and strategies, preference elicitation, assessment methods for negotiation performance, learning and adaptativeness in negotiation, models of emotion and user awareness, the use and creation of domain knowledge, user interfaces for negotiation support, human-supported assessment of opponent, conflict handling styles, experimental methods.
