Following the tradition of Agent Link Technical Forum Groups, we
announce the first edition of a Simulation Technical
Forum Group focussing discussions on methodological and technical
aspects of agent- and multi-agent-based simulation.
We will work on identification of and solution suggestions for challenges
of agent- and multi-agent-based simulation. We also want to
establish links between members of the agent-based simulation community
which could lead to common research activities and projects.

Topics of interest are (but are not limited to):
* Can modelers creativity be supported by engineering?
* What are the particular challenges in agent-based simulation engineering?
* Suggestions for design, testing, calibration, verification and validation
  strategies, methods, tools?
* Can we come up with a shared meta model of an agent-based simulation model?
* Challenges and solutions for multi-scale modeling?
* Can AOSE specification languages be used for simulations?
* Is a simulation problem more than just a particular set of requirements?
* What kind of AOSE models for supporting Agent-based simulation design?
* How can we systematically involve human experts and stakeholders?
* What kind of tools do we need for supporting agent-based simulation and
  modelling?
* What are the particular properties that a modeller must be able to
  expect from a simulation platform/engine?

*************************************************************************
Preliminary Program

The meeting will be held on December 15th at University of Jussieu in
Paris, France, near the location where EUMAS 2010

Special Issue on “State of the Art in Self-Adaptive Software Systems”

=======================================================
Call for Papers
Special Issue on “State of the Art in Self-Adaptive Software Systems”
Journal of Systems and Software (JSS)
=======================================================

Modern software systems have to operate under highly dynamic and
unpredictable operating conditions. User needs may change dynamically,
availability of resources may vary, subsystems may come and go at runtime,
etc. To deal with such dynamics, systems must be self-adaptive, i.e. they
must be able to adapt themselves at runtime to optimize performance, protect
from intrusions, heal from failures, etc. During the last decade, multiple
approaches have been proposed to engineer self-adaptive systems. From these
efforts, we learned that the construction of self-adaptive systems is
significantly more challenging than traditional systems. The aim of this
special issue is to provide an overview of the state of the art in the field
of self-adaptive software systems and outline the challenges for future
research.

We invite quality submissions focusing on all aspects of self-adaptation,
with an emphasis on the engineering of self-adaptive software systems.
Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to:

- models and theories for self-adaptation
- formal methods for self-adaptive systems
- architectural styles and patterns for self-adaptive systems
- control loops and reflective architectures for self-adaptation
- quality of service concerns in self-adaptive systems
- mechanisms that support monitoring, analysis, planning, and execution
phases of self-adaptation
- dealing with uncertainty in self-adaptive systems
- self-adaptation versus self-organization
- verification of self-adaptive systems, including runtime verification
- methods for engineering self-adaptive systems
- evolution of self-adaptive systems
- case studies and empirical experiments involving self-adaptive systems
- validation of self-adaptation
- application of self-adaptation techniques in industrial and real world
settings
- self-adaptation in component-based system
- self-adaptation in service-oriented systems
- agent-based approaches to self-adaptation
- aspect-oriented approaches to self-adaptation
- self-adaptation in pervasive and mobile systems
- application of principles from biology, sociology, and physics to engineer
self-adaptive systems

All articles should consider the practical application of the idea through
case studies, experiments, empirical validation, or systematic comparisons
with other approaches already in practice.

Pervasive Health 2011

Pervasive Health 2011 Conference 23rd-26th May, 2011 :: Dublin, Ireland
http://www.pervasivehealth.org/

---------------------------------- - - - - - - - - - -  -  -  -  -   -
Submission deadline: February 4th, 2011
---------------------------------- - - - - - - - - - -  -  -  -  -   -

It is with great pleasure that we announce the 5th International Conference
on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare.

The overall goal of the conference remains tightly coupled with the original
aims of the field, to address a set of related technologies and concepts
that help integrate healthcare more seamlessly into everyday life,
regardless of space and time. To achieve this, it is necessary to take a
multidisciplinary approach to Pervasive Healthcare Technology research and
development.

The Pervasive Healthcare Community has a broad scope of research topics and
concerns:
- identifying and understanding problems from a technological, social, and
medical perspective (with a particular emphasis on understanding and
supporting patient needs);
- design, implementation, and evaluation of supporting hardware and software
infrastructures, algorithms, and applications; and
- organisational strategies that facilitate integration of Pervasive
Healthcare Technology into the healthcare enterprise.

The 2011 Pervasive Healthcare conference aims to gather technology experts,
practitioners, industry and international authorities contributing towards
the assessment, development and deployment of pervasive medical based
technologies, standards and procedures.

The theme of this year’s conference is: Coping with the Challenges and
Opportunities within Pervasive E-Healthcare (COPE), with a special focus on
pervasive healthcare management and its ability to deliver timely, quality
based information to medical practitioners in providing high levels of
patient care. The challenges and opportunities within e-Healthcare are
immense. A multidisciplinary and coordinated approach is needed from 1) user
requirements, 2) technology development and 3) application integration, to
help deliver a successful pervasive healthcare management system.
Traditional healthcare environments are extremely complex and challenging to
manage, as they are required to cope with an assortment of patient
conditions under various circumstances with a number of resource
constraints. Pervasive healthcare technologies seek to respond to a variety
of these pressures by successfully integrating them within existing health
care environments.
Technologies, standards and procedures on their own provide little and or no
meaningful service. It is essential that pervasive healthcare environments,
through a combined approach of data collection, data correlation and data
presentation, assist health care professionals in delivering high levels of
patient care, and empower individuals and their families for self-care and
health management.

Event Recognition

=======================================
Special Issue on Event Recognition
Applied Artificial Intelligence Journal
=======================================

Users and organisations collect data in various structured and unstructured digital formats, but they cannot fully utilise these data to support content and resource management. It is evident that the analysis and interpretation of the available data needs to be automated, in order for large data volumes to be transformed into operational knowledge. Events are particularly important pieces of
knowledge, as they represent activities of special significance both for users and organisations. Therefore, the recognition of events is of utmost importance. Consider, for example, the recognition of trends given user contributions in social Web 2.0 applications, the recognition of attacks on nodes of a computer network given the exchanged TCP/IP messages, the recognition of suspicious trader
behaviour given the transactions in a financial market, and the recognition of various types of cardiac arrhythmia given electrocardiograms.
We invite quality submissions focusing on various aspects of event recognition, including analysis of video, audio, text and other sensor data, as well as recognition on fused data sources. While we place emphasis on theoretical contributions, we also welcome papers describing interesting applications.

Broad topics include:
=====================
- Representation languages for event recognition
- Algorithms for real-time event recognition
- Probabilistic reasoning for event recognition
- Machine learning for event recognition
- Event recognition architectures
- Benchmarks, performance evaluations, and testbeds
- Domain-specific deployments of event recognition systems
- Multimedia and social media analysis for event recognition
- Clustering, concept recognition and multi-modal/fusion techniques
- User interaction and interfaces for event navigation, browsing and management

Context-awareness in Retrieval and Recommendation

CALL FOR PAPERS

CaRR2011 :: IUI2011 Workshop on Context-awareness in Retrieval and Recommendation
Location: Palo Alto, California, USA
Date: February 13, 2011

General Information:
--------------------
Context-aware information is widely available in various ways such as interaction patterns, location, devices, annotations, query suggestions and user profiles and is becoming more and more important for enhancing retrieval performance and recommendation results. At the moment, the main issue to cope with is not only recommending or retrieving the most relevant items and content, but defining them ad hoc. Further relevant issues are personalizing and adapting the information and the way it is displayed to the user's current situation (device, location) and interests.
In this workshop we focus on the integration of context for retrieval and recommendation.
We recognize a general content context and a user-centric content context.
A general content context is a common case defined by time, weather, location and many similar other aspects. A user-centric content context is given by the content of user profiles such as language, interests, devices used for interaction, etc.

Call for Papers:
----------------
The aim of the CaRR Workshop is to invite the community to a discussion in which we will try to find new creative ways to handle context-awareness. Furthermore, the workshop aims at improving the exchange of ideas between different communities involved in research concerning, among other machine learning, information retrieval and recommendation.
The workshop is especially intended for researchers working on multidisciplinary tasks who want to discuss problems and synergies. We are interested in ideas about creative and collaborative approaches for context-aware retrieval and recommendation.

The participants are encouraged to address the following questions:

    * Why is context-awareness in retrieval and recommendation necessary?
    * Which benefits come from context-aware retrieval and recommendation systems?
    * How do user interfaces handle context?
    * In what ways can context improve HCI?
    * How can we combine general- and user-centric context-aware technologies?
    * How should context affect the way information is presented?

The topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following aspects:

    * Context-aware information retrieval
    * Context-aware profiling, clustering and collaborative filtering
    * Machine learning for context-aware information retrieval and ontology learning
    * Ubiquitous and context-aware computing
    * Use of context-aware technologies in UI/HCI
    * Context-aware advertising
    * Recommendations for mobile users
    * Context-awareness in portable devices

Paper submissions and reviews will be handled electronically through the CaRR page in EasyChair (which will be made available at a later point in time).

Workshop Theme :
=============

Techniques based on metaheuristics and nature-inspired paradigms can
provide efficient solutions to a wide variety of problems. Moreover,
parallel and distributed metaheuristics can be used to provide more
powerful problem solving environments in a variety of fields, ranging,
for example, from finance to bio- and health-informatics. This
workshop seeks to provide an opportunity for researchers to explore
the connection between metaheuristics and the development of solutions
to problems that arise in operations research, parallel computing,
telecommunications, bioinformatics, and many others.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Nature-inspired methods (e.g. ant colonies, GAs, cellular automata,
DNA and molecular computing, local search, etc) for problem solving
environments.
* Parallel and distributed metaheuristics techniques (algorithms,
technologies and tools).
* Applications combining traditional parallel and distributed
computing and optimization techniques as well as theoretical issues
(convergence, complexity, etc).
* Other algorithms and applications relating the above mentioned
research areas.

Prospective authors of high quality research contributions are invited
to submit an electronic copy of their manuscript not exceeding 8
two-column pages including figures and references in the traditional
IEEE format used in IPDPS. Please, use Postscript or PDF when
possible. In your email, please indicate paper title, author(s), and
the corresponding author.

A selected group of papers from the workshop will be invited to
submit extended versions of their papers to a special issue of an
international scholarly journal. Further announcements will be made
during the workshop.
