Overview and Aim
======================================================
The International Web Rule Symposium has evolved from an annual series
of international workshops since 2002, international conferences in 2005
and 2006, and international symposia since 2007. This year, the 4th
International Web Rule Symposium (RuleML-2010) will be held near
Washington, DC, USA, co-located with the 13th Business Rules Forum, the
world's largest Business Rules event. RuleML-2010 is devoted to
practical distributed rule technologies and rule-based applications,
which need language standards for rules (inter)operating in, e.g., the
Semantic Web, Enterprise Systems, Intelligent Multi-Agent Systems,
Event-Driven Architectures, and Service-Oriented Applications.

RuleML-2010 is a research-based, industry-focused symposium: its main
goal is to build a bridge between academia and industry in the field of
rules and semantic technology, and so to stimulate the cooperation and
interoperability between business and research, by bringing together
rule system providers, participants in rule standardization efforts,
open source communities, practitioners, and researchers. The concept of
the symposium has also advanced continuously in the face of extremely
rapid progress in practical rule and event processing technologies. As a
result, RuleML-2010 will feature hands-on demonstrations and challenges
alongside a wide range of thematic tracks. It will thus be an exciting
venue to exchange new ideas and experiences on all issues related to the
engineering, management, integration, interoperation, and interchange of
rules in distributed enterprise intranets and open distributed
environments.


Conference Theme

This year, we particularly welcome submissions that address applications
of Web rule technologies for business and information systems. We invite

RuleML-2010 Challenge
======================================================
The RuleML-2010 Challenge is one of the highlights of RuleML-2010. Rules
are used in interesting and practically relevant ways to, e.g., derive
useful information, transform knowledge, provide decision support, and
provide automated rule-based monitoring, enforcement, validation or
management of the behavioral logic of an application. The Challenge
offers participants the chance to demonstrate their commercial and open
source tools, use cases, and applications.

This year Rule Challenge will have the following theme:

"Modelling Rules in the Temporal and Geospatial Applications"

The participants of the Challenge have the opportunity to understand the current trend of rule technology and standard development in the temporal and geospatial domain including:

- temporal modelling and reasoning;
- geospatial modelling and reasoning;
- cross linking between temporal and geospatial knowledge;
- visualization of the rules with graphics models in order  to favour the end-user interaction.

To ensure high quality, submitted papers will be carefully peer-reviewed by 3 PC members based on originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of exposition. Authors are requested to upload the abstracts of their papers before May 25, 2010 and to upload their complete papers by June 1, 2010. The selected papers will be published in book form in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. The best paper from all submissions will be determined by the PC and a Best Paper Award will be presented at the Symposium. All submissions must be made electronically. A selection of revised papers will be resubmitted to a special issue of a journal.

Both within AI systems and in interactive systems, the ability to explain reasoning processes and results can substantially affect system usability. For example, in recommender systems good explanations may help to inspire user trust and loyalty, increase satisfaction, make it quicker and easier for users to find what they want, and persuade them to try or buy a recommended item.

Current interest in mixed-initiative systems provides a new context in which explanation issues may play a crucial role. When knowledge-based systems are partners in an interactive socio-technical process, with incomplete and changing problem descriptions, communication between human and software systems is a central part. Explanations exchanged between human agents and software agents may play an important role in mixed-initiative problem solving.

Other disciplines such as cognitive science, linguistics, philosophy of  science, psychology, and education have investigated explanation as well. They consider varying aspects, making it clear that there are many  different views of the nature of explanation and facets of explanation to explore. Within the field of knowledge-based systems, explanations have been considered as an important link between humans and machines. There, their main purpose has been to increase the confidence of the user in the system’s result, by providing evidence of how it was derived. Additional AI research has focused on how computer systems can use explanations themselves, for example to guide learning.

This workshop series aims to draw on multiple perspectives on explanation, to examine how explanation can be applied to further the development of robust and dependable systems and to illuminate system processes to increase user acceptance and feeling of control.

In addition to presentations and discussions of invited contributions and invited talks, this workshop will offer organised and open sessions for targeted discussions and creating an interdisciplinary community. Demonstration sessions will provide the opportunity to showcase explanation-enabled/-aware applications.

SUBMISSIONS AND STYLE
Workshop submissions will be electronic, in pdf format only, using the EasyChair submission system linked from the workshop website.

Papers must be written in English and not exceed 12 pages in the Springer LNCS format. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the workshop and the ECAI conference and present  the contribution in order to be published in the workshop  proceedings. The organising committee is considering editing a special issue of an appropriate international journal (e.g., Kluwer’s Knowledge-based Systems, Elsevier’s Expert Systems with Applications, or Springer’s Information System Frontiers) depending on the number and quality of the submissions.

Those wishing to participate providing a live system demonstration should submit a proposal (1-2 pages).

Those wishing to participate without paper or demo submission should submit a brief synopsis of their relevant work or at least a brief statement of interest.

Ubiquitous sensors, devices, networks and information are paving the way towards a smart world in which computational intelligence is distributed throughout the physical environment to provide reliable and relevant services to people. This ubiquitous intelligence will change the computing landscape because it will enable new breeds of applications and systems to be developed and the realm of computing possibilities will be significantly extended. By enhancing everyday objects with intelligence, many tasks and processes could be simplified, the physical spaces where people interact like the workplaces and homes, could become more efficient, safer and more enjoyable. Ubiquitous computing, or pervasive computing, uses these many “smart things or u-things” to create smart environments, services and applications.

A smart thing can be endowed with different levels of intelligence, and may be context-aware, active, interactive, reactive, proactive, assistive, adaptive, automated, sentient, perceptual, cognitive, autonomic and/or thinking. Research on ubiquitous intelligence is an emerging research field covering many disciplines. A series of grand challenges exist to move from the current level of computing services to the smart world of adaptive and intelligent services. Started in 2005, the series of UIC conferences has been held in Taipei, Nagasaki, Three Gorges (China), Hong Kong, Oslo and Brisbane. UIC 2010 will include a highly selective program of technical papers, accompanied by workshops, panel discussions and keynote speeches. Established as a premier venue in the area of ubiquitous intelligence and computing, UIC 2010 will offer a forum for researchers to exchange ideas and experiences in developing intelligent/smart objects, environments and systems.

The UIC 2010 Organizing Committee invites proposals for one-day workshops affiliated with the conference and addressing research areas related to the conference. The workshop proceedings will be published by IEEE CS Press. Submit workshop proposals to workshops chairs via email (robertchh@gmail.com and mieso08@gmail.com) by 31 January 2010. Besides workshops, UIC 2010 will also include a special track, demo/exhibitions and a panel. Please visit the conference website for details.

PAPER PUBLICATION:
------------------

Accepted conference papers are planned to be published by Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS, EI indexed). At least one author of each accepted paper is required to register and present their work at the conference, otherwise the paper will not be included in the proceedings. Distinguished Selected papers, after further extensions and revisions, will be published in special issues of prestigious journals including Personal and Ubiquitous Computing (Springer), International Journal of Information Acquisition (World Scientific), and International Journal of Autonomous and Adaptive Communications Systems (Inderscience).
