EXPLANATION-AWARE COMPUTING (ExaCt 2010)

                   FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS
               for the 5th International and
                   ECAI 2010 Workshop on

          EXPLANATION-AWARE COMPUTING (ExaCt 2010)

             16-17 August 2010, Lisbon, Portugal

                http://exact2010.workshop.hm

        ** Paper submission deadline: May 7, 2010 **

Both within AI systems and in interactive systems, the ability to explain reasoning processes and results can substantially affect system usability. For example, in recommender systems good explanations may help to inspire user trust and loyalty, increase satisfaction, make it quicker and easier for users to find what they want, and persuade them to try or buy a recommended item.

Current interest in mixed-initiative systems provides a new context in which explanation issues may play a crucial role. When knowledge-based systems are partners in an interactive socio-technical process, with incomplete and changing problem descriptions, communication between human and software systems is a central part. Explanations exchanged between human agents and software agents may play an important role in mixed-initiative problem solving.

Other disciplines such as cognitive science, linguistics, philosophy of  science, psychology, and education have investigated explanation as well. They consider varying aspects, making it clear that there are many  different views of the nature of explanation and facets of explanation to explore. Within the field of knowledge-based systems, explanations have been considered as an important link between humans and machines. There, their main purpose has been to increase the confidence of the user in the system’s result, by providing evidence of how it was derived. Additional AI research has focused on how computer systems can use explanations themselves, for example to guide learning.

This workshop series aims to draw on multiple perspectives on explanation, to examine how explanation can be applied to further the development of robust and dependable systems and to illuminate system processes to increase user acceptance and feeling of control.

If you would like to participate in discussions on this topic or like to receive further information about this workshop you might consider joining the Yahoo!-group

Ubiquitous sensors, devices, networks and information are paving the way towards a smart world in which computational intelligence is distributed throughout the physical environment to provide reliable and relevant services to people. This ubiquitous intelligence will change the computing landscape because it will enable new breeds of applications and systems to be developed and the realm of computing possibilities will be significantly extended. By enhancing everyday objects with intelligence, many tasks and processes could be simplified, the physical spaces where people interact like the workplaces and homes, could become more efficient, safer and more enjoyable. Ubiquitous computing, or pervasive computing, uses these many “smart things or u-things” to create smart environments, services and applications.

A smart thing can be endowed with different levels of intelligence, and may be context-aware, active, interactive, reactive, proactive, assistive, adaptive, automated, sentient, perceptual, cognitive, autonomic and/or thinking. Research on ubiquitous intelligence is an emerging research field covering many disciplines. A series of grand challenges exist to move from the current level of computing services to the smart world of adaptive and intelligent services. Started in 2005, the series of UIC conferences has been held in Taipei, Nagasaki, Three Gorges (China), Hong Kong, Oslo and Brisbane. UIC 2010 will include a highly selective program of technical papers, accompanied by workshops, panel discussions and keynote speeches. Established as a premier venue in the area of ubiquitous intelligence and computing, UIC 2010 will offer a forum for researchers to exchange ideas and experiences in developing intelligent/smart objects, environments and systems.

Workshop on Goal-based Business Process Engineering

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WGBP 2010 - Call for Papers

International Workshop on Goal-based Business Process Engineering (WGBP 2010)
at the Fourteenth IEEE International EDOC Conference (The Enterprise Computing Conference)

Vitória/ES – Brazil
25-29 October 2010

Papers submission deadline: 17 April 2010
Web site: http://edoc2010.inf.ufes.br/wgbp2010

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- ABOUT THE WORKSHOP -
--------------------------------------------
Competitive businesses and an ever changing market have demanded that current organizations constantly evolve. To achieve that, it becomes necessary to develop a deep understanding of the organizational practices and systems. This motivates an increasing interest in business processes engineering. Such interest has the benefit to allow a deep understanding of the processes that generate the main products and services offered by the organization. This may lead to: a) enhance these processes to obtain higher quality both in products and services; b) develop information systems which are more in line with the current processes, so that such systems more appropriately satisfy user requirements; and c) provide documentation of the applied practices, reading to more efficient knowledge management, which enables the integration of newcomers within the organization.

However, to guarantee that business process engineering is applied to its full potential, keeping the organization competitive, it is necessary to understand how these processes achieve the local and strategic goals of the organization. This may guide the decision regarding which activities and processes should be the priorities of that particular organization.

Goal modeling has gained a lot of attention in the past few years, especially in the field of Requirements Engineering. In this context, goals are applied as a natural modeling construct to capture the requirements of a system to-be. Within the Business Process Engineering community, some works have included the concept of goal as modeling primitive, acknowledging its importance to motivate processes that underlie organizations. However, up to very recently, such goal models have remained peripheral and often ignored in current business process engineering practices.

The International Workshop on Goal-based Business Process Engineering (WGBP 2010) is the first of what we hope to be many events that bring together researchers and practitioners in the areas of goals and business process engineering to discuss how these two complementary areas may be integrated. This way, we hope to contribute to the development of each of these areas, as well as to create a forum where works that combine them may be published and discussed.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
===================
The widespread use of Internet technologies has an important impact on the way organizations deal with their partners and customers. To remain competitive, organizations are under pressure to take advantage of the information revolution that the Internet and the Web have brought about. Most organizations are adopting Web-based approaches for more automation, efficient business processes, personalization, and worldwide visibility.

Service-Oriented Computing design principles and their implementation technologies such as Web services, JBI, and SCA could help organizations to become more Web-oriented. This should result in building interoperable business applications that can cross organizational boundaries. The development of different industry standards, products and tools for supporting service-based system design and development is advancing at a very rapid rate. Despite all the efforts that are put into Service-Oriented Computing research and development, many organizations still struggle with how to make their core business operations comply with Service-Oriented Computing principles.

The purpose of this workshop is to discuss the recent and significant developments in the field of Service-Oriented Computing. BWSS 2010 - SECOND BRAZILIAN WORKSHOP ON SOCIAL SIMULATION

BWSS 2010 - SECOND BRAZILIAN WORKSHOP ON SOCIAL SIMULATION

[Workshop co-located with the 20th Brazilian Symposium on Artificial Intelligence - SBIA, the XI Brazilian Symposium on Artificial Neural Network - SBRN, the IV Intelligent Robotics Meeting - JRI (with IX Latin American Robotics Competition - LARC, and Latin American Robotics Symposium - LARS)]

São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo, Brazil, 23-28 October, 2010

The BWSS 2010 Website is http://www.ncc.furg.br/bwss2010 .

BWSS 2010 - Social simulation has a dialectical relationship to Artificial Intelligence, in general, and Multi-agent Systems, in particular. It is both an area for the application of methods, techniques and technologies of AI and MAS, as well as a source of inspiration for new theories, models and methods for AI and MAS, as it draws upon the theories, models and methods of the social sciences (anthropology, sociology, political science, economy, government, management, etc.).

This one-day workshop will address theoretical, methodological, technical and instrumental issues concerning the area of simulation of social systems. The workshop will thus have an interdisciplinary character.

Theories and models of societies and smaller social systems that embody a computational concern are at the center of area.

Micro-level and macro-level issues concerning structures and processes at the social and individual levels, as well as the mutual influence between such conceptual levels, and problems of upward and downward causation between them should also be contemplated.

Techniques, tools and computational environments for the simulation of those models, specially those based on agent and multi-agent technology, and AI methods in general, should be of primary concern.

Application of social simulation to the various areas of social sciences (anthropology, sociology, political science, economy, government, management, etc.) should also be of interest to the audience.

BWSS 2010 will have two invited speakers:

- Prof. Nigel Gilbert (University of Surrey, UK) Title: Intra & inter-network dynamics, and the 'semantics' of the links
- Prof. Cristiano Castelfranchi (ISTC-CNR, Italy) Title: Modelling complex social systems: opportunities and challenges

We are cordially inviting you to submit a paper to BWSS 2010. The topics of interest are (not exclusively):

- theoretical foundations of social simulation
- methods and models for social simulation
- AI and MAS tools, techniques, models and environments for social simulation
- applications of social simulation (in research, government, management, education, etc.)

Important dates:

- Deadline for paper submission: June 28, 2010
- Notification to authors: July 28, 2010
- Camera-ready copies of papers: August 12, 2010
- Workshop date: co-located with SBIA, 23-28 October, 2010 (day yet to be announced)

Paper format:

Papers should be written in English, with at most 12 pages, and submitted in PDF format, following the Springer LNCS style (see http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html). The submission system will be JEMS/SBC, through the BWSS 2010 website. At least one author of any accepted paper should attend the workshop.

Proceedings:

The papers accepted for the workshop will be published in the Workshop Proceedings.

Best Paper:

An extended version of the best paper presented at the workshop, selected by the Program Committee, will be invited to be submitted for the JBCS - Journal of the Brazilian Computer Society. (http://www.sbc.org.br/index.php?language=2&subject=309)

Post-Proceedings:

Depending on the number of submissions, we are planning to propose a special issue on Social Simulation of the JBCS, where the authors of a selection of best papers presented at workshop, among other possible submissions, would be invited to submit extended versions of their papers, including the discussions and suggestions arised at the workshop oral presentations and working meetings.
